HostGator vs DigitalOcean: Quick Summary

If you’re trying to decide between HostGator and DigitalOcean, it really comes down to what you need.

HostGator is a traditional web host great for small to medium sites, offering easy-to-use tools, unmetered bandwidth, and solid support.

DigitalOcean is a cloud hosting powerhouse built for scalability, speed, and flexibility, with more global server locations and a pay-as-you-go pricing model.

In my comparison, DigitalOcean edged out HostGator thanks to better performance, stronger security, and more scalable options.

But if you want something simple with great customer support and classic features, HostGator still holds its own.

Overall Comparison: HostGator vs DigitalOcean

Winner: DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean is much more scalable, flexible and faster than HostGator. It also has physical servers in more countries than HostGator. Keep reading to learn more about what each of these hosts offers:

Round 1: Hosting features – Key Hosting Features and Services

Key HostGator Features

HostGator offers unlimited bandwidth across all of its shared hosting plans and between 120GB to 240GB disk space in VPS Hosting. As for its dedicated plans, you get up to 1 Terabyte of high-performance SSD storage with optional expanded HDD storage.

Furthermore, you get free daily backups and restore, and 1-click WordPress installation. It’s also free to migrate your existing site to HostGator if you have one.

All plans provide you with a free domain, a free SSL certificate, and the Gator Website builder, a tool that lets you build your website from scratch using drag-and-drop functionality.  There’s also a Reseller hosting package for people who want to start their own hosting companies and resell the company’s packages.

Key DigitalOcean Features

DigitalOcean’s hosting features differ from that of HostGator. Their object storage provides 200GB disk space and their VPS hosting plans (aka CPU Droplets) range between 25GB NVMe SSD storage and 7TB storage. Their WordPress plans offer up to 5TB bandwidth and 150GB storage.

Also included in their plans are SSL certificates, DDoS protection, malware scanners, firewalls, spam detection, and regular site backups, as well as security settings like SSH access and 2-FA authentication.

Finally, there’s a load balancer plan best suited for websites and mobile apps that experience huge traffic spikes.

And the winner is… DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean’s features are quite different from those of traditional hosts like HostGator. Being a cloud platform, DigitalOcean’s hosting architecture is optimized for better security, speed, and performance. DigitalOcean wins this round with more features.

Round 2:  Prices & Plans

HostGator Pricing Plans

HostGator offers a varied set of hosting plans each suited for the following needs:

• Shared hosting plans – tailored for new and small websites such as personal websites
• VPS hosting plans – tailored for moderate, growing business websites such as news websites and Ecommerce sites
• Cloud hosting plans – for businesses that need scalable hosting resources e.g: Online stores with traffic spikes on black Friday,
• WordPress hosting plans – all tailored for WordPress websites
• Dedicated hosting plans – dedicated resources for companies and large corporations dealing with high traffic and large volumes of data, or in need of top-notch security.

DigitalOcean Pricing Plans

Unlike HostGator, DigitalOcean’s pricing model is based on how much resources you use within a specified period of time (minute, hourly, monthly, etc). The various hosting solutions are:

• Web Hosting – Simple and reliable cloud website hosting
• Managed Database – Fully managed MongoDB, MySQL, Redis, and PostgreSQL database engines.
• VPS Hosting – Droplets for creating highly-scalable websites and applications
• WordPress Hosting – Reliable and scalable hosting plans for WordPress
• Other solutions – Managed WooCommerce hosting, Cloud VPN servers, Video and SaaS platforms.

And the Winner Is… DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean’s pay-as-you-go model is much more efficient because you only get to pay for the resources you need. By contrast, HostGator’s plans come with a fixed price and you pay it regardless of how many resources you end up using.

Round 3: Website performance (Uptime & Speed)

When choosing a host, it’s necessary to research the host’s server uptime and speed – two metrics used for measuring a website’s performance. Uptime is basically how long the host’s server stays up and running. Server speed is the time taken for the server to send back the first byte of data.

Higher uptime guarantees less downtime for your site, resulting in round-the-clock availability. Fast server response time results in search engines ranking websites high in search results. Over to HostGator vs DigitalOcean:

HostGator Uptime & Speed

Using GTMetrix and Google PageSpeed Insights, I ran separate tests on HostGator to determine their response time and performance overall. The results are as follows:

On GTMetrix, HostGator’s average server speed (TTFB) was 567 ms, and it scored 68% in overall performance:

On PageSpeed Insights, HostGator performed worse with a server speed of 1.20 s and an overall performance of 64% performance:

Keep in mind that the page load speed will vary depending on how far the location of the server serving the site is to the user requesting it.

DigitalOcean Uptime & Speed

I ran the same tests on DigitalOcean and the results were much better than HostGators’.

The results from GTMetrix showed that DigitalOcean had a TTFB of 305 ms and an overall performance of 96%:

On Google PageSpeed Insights, DigitalOcean’s TTFB was 395ms and its performance was an excellent 92%:

And the Winner Is… DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean is one of the fastest, best-performing cloud hosting providers in the world. Their entire architecture is tailored to provide cutting-edge performance benefits that most traditional hosts (including HostGator) just can’t provide.

Round 4: Customer Support – Who Has the Best Support System?

HostGator customer Support

HostGator offers an extensive list of support channels, including phone, live chat, email, video tutorials, a Facebook community, a huge knowledgebase and a blog with tons of informational content.

Even if you’re not a customer, you can still carry out a live chat with their support team. I tested it myself and instantly got a reply from one of their agents.

Here’s the screenshot of my conversation with the agent:

Their Blog, KnowledgeBase, YouTube channel, and the FaceBook group has information and solutions to most of the common hosting issues you’ll encounter with HostGator. To access Sales and General support, you can use their call lines (which also has an international line).

DigitalOcean customer Support

DigitalOcean offers 24/7/365 access to various support channels including email, live chat, telephone, and ticketing. Live chat with support agents can be held in Slack and Google Hangouts.

You can also access their famous DigitalOcean blog, documentation, FAQs, and their YouTube channel for self-learning purposes.

DigitalOcean’s YouTube channel uploads new tutorials and guides about their various products and services on a regular basis.

And the Winner Is… HostGator

This round of HostGator vs DigitalOcean was close, but I chose HostGator as the winner for having a more accessible live chat feature.

Round 5: Ease of use – Which Platform Is Easier to Use?

HostGator Ease of Use

HostGator features a very intuitive user interface that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for – whether you’re new to the world of hosting or have been in the industry for a while.

For your website management and administration duties, HostGator provides a modern cPanel that gives you access to so many features and tools in the backend:

Here on your cPanel you have everything you need to manage your website. From themes, databases, and subdomains to website analytics, security, and other advanced settings.

DigitalOcean Ease of Use

DigitalOcean’s user interface is just as easy to navigate as HostGator’s. On their homepage, you can choose one of the various sign-up methods to create an account with DigitalOcean and access their resources.

For site management, you can add the cPanel and WHM to your

DigitalOcean droplet. The account management dashboard offers a robust set of cloud customization features for optimizing your site.

The cPanel interface is very intuitive as well, providing all the tools you need to manage your website.

And the Winner Is…HostGator

DigitalOcean’s dashboard is much more complex than HostGator’s and you can do so much with it. On the other hand, both of their cPanels are very simple and intuitive. Personally, I prefer HostGator’s UI over that of DigitalOcean – it’s more user-friendly and easy to navigate.

Round 6: Security – Which Platform is More Secure?

HostGator Security

All of HostGator’s hosting plans come with a free SSL certificate and CloudFlare support. For an extra $5.99, you can install SiteLock Security and turn on daily malware scans on your website. With the advanced Prevent and Prevent plus plans, you get additional security features such as a Web Application Firewall, DDoS protection, and Database scanning. Backups are carried out automatically as long as they’re less than 10GB.

DigitalOcean Security

DigitalOcean uses SSL encryption and DDoS protection to shield its entire network edge from data theft and DDoS attacks. SSH keys are used to provide a more secure way of logging into your Droplets. Firewalls are implemented throughout the network at no additional cost. Users can configure their cluster to receive automatic patch updates. Finally, backups of each database are taken and stored off-site.

And the Winner Is… DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean has better security features overall compared to conventional hosts like HostGator. Most of the features are also built into the architecture, and for advanced security features, you simply pay based on your requirements.

Round 7: Server locations

Server location impacts the speed at which your website is delivered to users. When a host has data centers all around the world, then it’s a very good sign that your site will be available to a global audience. This leads to faster load speeds, and in turn, higher search rankings and more business for you.

HostGator Server location

Hostgator servers are located in the U.S.A (Provo, Utah, and Atlanta) and other undisclosed locations. You can also integrate CloudFlare to increase your website’s speed across different parts of the world by routing the website data through 23 data centers in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia:

DigitalOcean Server location

DigitalOcean has data centers in more international locations than HostGator, allowing them to distribute content globally at impressive speeds. The locations are:

• The U.S.A (New York and San Francisco)
• Canada
• United Kingdom
• Germany
• The Netherlands
• Singapore
• India

And the Winner Is… DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean has physical servers in more locations than HostGator, and as a result, offers you better globally availability and superior performance. Your website is likely to load faster on DigitalOcean than on HostGator.
