A set of tenets will govern the new Enterprise APIs to ensure that any changes will minimize the disruption to the customer.
Kripa Krishnan, who serves the role of a VP of
and Technical Infrastructure, had this to say:Over the last several years at Google Cloud, we’ve really been trying to invest time to improve the experience of our customers on our platform. So this is just another step. We’ve faced some criticism in how we support customers, especially with the stability of our APIs — for example, removing APIs without notice or [giving customers] enough time to respond. So we’re trying to address that problem.
With the new API designation, the provider will not be able to remove or change any feature in a way that is not backward compatible while a customer is actively using it.
In case a change is inevitable, then Google Cloud will have to provide for an effortless migration. Critical security, legal or intellectual property issues caused by the feature are the only exception to this rule.
Next,
will deliver a minimum of one year’s notice of an impending change to customers. During this time, the feature will continue to operate without issue.Customers will also receive tools, documents, and other migration materials stemming from a new available version with equivalent functionality and performance.
We have worked hard to earn your trust in our cloud platform. Today, we take another step by introducing Google Enterprise API principles designed to maximize your confidence in Google Cloud, @GoogleWorkspace, and @GMapsPlatform APIs. Read them here ↓https://t.co/echMScDT8W

Furthermore,
To ensure following these tenets, a centralized board of product and engineering leads will review any change Google introduces to an API. The company will also follow a rigorous product lifecycle evaluation.
Krishnan further added:
The tenets governing the Enterprise APIs are “not just a description of a bunch of mechanical steps for people to follow” but a “shift in the mindset of the organization.” We’re trying to pivot more and more towards putting customers front and center.
In addition to the APIs, Google Cloud has also introduced Mission Critical Services and simplified launch stages to develop a more predictable product roadmap.
