Also, there are many smaller improvements like better USB support and upgrades to basic packages like GCC. In this article, we’re going to cover the new features in this release.

Updated Linux Kernel

Cosmic Cuttlefish includes Linux Kernel 4.18. There were many improvements in the Linux Kernel adding support for many peripherals including better support for USB-C and Thunderbolt devices as well as better support for AMD and Nvidia graphics hardware. On top of this Gnome 3.30 has undergone many under the hood changes improving the overall speed of the UI while simultaneously reducing the amount of system resources it consumes. For the desktop user, this is one of the best releases of Gnome yet!

Support Issues

If you are using Ubuntu in a mission-critical environment, it may be best to skip this version of Ubuntu. Ubuntu 18.04 is an LTS (Long Term Support) release while support for this version will only extend nine months. i386 also cannot upgrade to this version of Ubuntu as Canonical is planning on removing support for this architecture from Ubuntu. That is what is new in Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish. While this version of Ubuntu won’t be with us long, desktop users will find a lot of value in the updated versions of Gnome and enhanced graphics support while server admins and devs get a nice preview of how the next LTS release is shaping up with software package updates and technology changes such as the removal of the i386 architecture.
