Downtown Host is based in Sarasota, Florida and was founded in 2001, offering world-wide hosting service with five locations across the United States, and one location each in the Netherlands and Singapore. Their website makes clear customers will be dealing with only one layer of operations as the company is privately operated and funded.
Uptime & Reliability
99.9% uptime guarantee
With three data centers strategically located across the United States, one in the Netherlands, and one in the Netherlands, customers should be able to feel confident that their web sites and servers should be available in accordance with Downtown Host’s 99.9% uptime guarantee.
Features
Nice hosting features at all levels
Downtown Host, unlike many other companies, states that they have their operations split in to three divisions: shared hosting, virtual private server and reseller hosting. I liked this distinction since many competitors seem to operate with an “everyone knows everything” approach which experience tells us simply isn’t the case.
The “about us” page highlights Downtown Host’s core values of quality, innovation, value, honesty & integrity, and customer satisfaction. The descriptions of each proposition were complete, showing a customer-centric focus to both direct customers as well as reseller clients. Long-term relationships are also showing as a goal with several testimonials to back up the companies claims.
Eight core packages are available, with the assertion that business of all sizes can be accommodated. Unlike many hosting companies, no personal or hobbyist offers are made but prices are reasonable and service category allotments seem generous for the price.
Pricing
Lots of different options for pricing
One feature that impressed me when looking at Downtown Host’s pricing schema was that different prices were available for different lengths of time, so there is no long-term commitment. For instance, the entry-level “shared copper package” offers 4 GB of disk space, 100 GB of bandwidth, unlimited add-on domains and email accounts, a pre-installed script library for $5.95 monthly without pre-payment or $3.57 monthly with a 3 year pre-paid agreement. The “shared gold package” increases the disk space to 20 GB and unlimited bandwidth with a monthly price of $15.95 without prepayment to $9.57.
VPS starts as low as $19.95 per month with 394 MB of RAM, 768 of disk swap space, 10 GB disk space and 200 GB bandwidth. There was a bit of a conflict regarding software, as one section shows the popular cPanel as an additional $15 per month, but included on the checklist on the same page.
Semi-dedicated servers start at $60.95 and go up to $100.95 per month with generous resource allowances. Dedicated servers are leased starting at $220 and go up to $400 month. While this may seem to be a premium price, every dedicated server package comes with a 100% uptime guarantee and is fully managed.
All packages also offer free moving service and are hosted on “litespeed” web servers. Another feature that is included with all packages is continuous R1soft data protection, something that seems to be an add-on that comes with a higher price from other hosting companies.
