There was a time when they could not resolve it on the phone and escalated to their resolution department and they followed up; admitted it was a problem on their end and resolved it. Have been with dotster for over 18 years. They found a malware PHP file that is part of a wordpress plug-in and completely suspended my account even URL forwarding stopped working for domains hosted on other sites. No warning, not...Read Morehing. To fix the problem I would update the plugin but as they stopped everything that could not be done. Their action was completely disproportionate to the problem.

The email from dotster reads:

A recent review of your account xxx uncovered it has been compromised. We found malicious scripts running in the background that appear to be degrading the server performance which is impacting other customers. In order to prevent further abuse/spam, we have suspended your account. A malware report for your account can be found at /stats/websitescan.txt

I had a look at the log file and it reads:

Corbett
Corbett,
You must be a stock owner in the company to get actual customer service from them. Nobody else gets good customer service from them. I've quit Dotster as of today, and every review on here is accurate based on my non-stock-holder experience.

Geoff Walker,
Dotster isn't publicly owned, so there's no stock. They are owned by Baker Capital, a private equity firm.

CORRECTION: Dotster is owned by *Clearlake Capital Group L.P.*, a private-equity firm.

Corbett,
Such trivial info about an LLC that has committed fraud, which is NOT trivial.

WORST COMPANY EVER- CROOKS!!!!!

we purchased a domain and constantly had problems. they state on their website that they are 24/7 support, but when we called them today (05/16/2020) they stated they aren't fulfilling calls and directed us to a worthless ticketin...Read Moreg process.

their website chat is even less helpful. we had a representative named Suma who refused to escalate to their manager.

they are a scammy reseller of domain.com. they don't even provide a unique service.

our domain and website are still down, despite us having paid for their service.

they are crooks. stay away. go with namecheap or godaddy instead.

The WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH!

If you want to be abused, lose money, lose countless hours with their awful IT support and then have to do it all over again - then this is the company for you! Their ineptitude caused my gmail account to be gone for an entire week (all of the emails that were sent to my business account lost) no backups, nothing. And their sorry - simply does not cover it. They they had the audacity to make charges to my credit card for services that were not ordered and never used. And their IT support - where does one begin. And then the ICANN issues. The many countless hours of trying to get that resolved because Dotsters back end does not allow for changed to the primary email account that was set up - many years ago. But hey when it comes time to asking me to continue with paying their services - those records are fine. But ICANN - not a chance! I hate this company!Less

Hacked my CC

I've just learned that this company of which I never heard charged my CC without my permission last year and this month again. Apparently for "domain protection" or so, not really clarified by the rep. However, my only provider ha...Read Mores been a different company for years now. A clear case of hacking. I've tried to solve the matter with their (outsourced) customer service and after 1h+ of out-of-this world debates in pidgin English (I was asked to provide info that was either private or unknown) in this case of HACKING, a "supervisor' confirmed he'd refund me the most recent charge. An annoying waste of time and money with an IT firm that has no proper service to solve hacking cases via its system.Less

HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE!

I have been using Dotster since 2010. Small issues over the years but were promptly fixed....until this year (2019).

I purchased 2 new domain names in January and at checkout I got an error message that my transaction could not...Read More be completed and that my account has been suspended. I immediately called Dotster's support. They had no idea why my account was suspended and lifted that. I found out that despite the "your transaction could not be completed" error message, Dotster did indeed charge my PayPay account. 3 TIMES for the one domain and overcharged by $20 on the other domain. After 6 1/2 hours (yes HOURS) over 3 days on the phone with supposed supervisors, my account is still not corrected.

I had to file a dispute with PayPal, which PayPal did resolve, but Dotster says they cancelled the one domain for non-payment. It shows paid and active for one year on my dashboard and as of 2 days ago, Dotster was supposed to send an email confirming that domain was paid, active and OK. Still waiting for that email. And they don't respond to my reply on THEIR email saying they'll have it corrected in 24 hours.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT USE DOTSTER! Why do I have to give them any stars????????????????

Reliability

No Uptime Promises but Details Given on Server Centre

Dotster is pretty sketchy when it comes to uptime and reliability with their hosting plans. They do not offer any kind of uptime statements or provide detailed information on the kind of stats you can expect.

Luckily, they do offer backups across all plans to give you that piece of mind, that if something should happen – you are covered. They also offer information on the Dotster servers, and state that they are held in a secure data centre with fully redundant power systems and 24/7 monitoring.

Features

Basic Tool and Feature Set With Tempting Extras

When we look at features and tools offered by Dotster, they really lack any depth and quality here but do have the tempting offer of free Adwords and Facebook credits to help you kick-start any marketing campaign.

The basic plan offered Unlimited disk space and bandwidth, along with 5 FTP logins and 10 MYSQL databases, which is basic offering that most people will be happy with. If you are looking for more features and tools then it might be worth seeing what other hosting companies are offering for the same monthly price.

Dotster also offer eco-friendly hosting with high-efficiency servers, and will plant a tree for every new eco-hosting customer.

Support

Varied Support Channels and Helpful Articles

Dotster do excel in their customer support, and offer every customer the opportunity to take advantage of contact details and knowledge bases packed with informative articles and video tutorials.

As well as a ticket system in place, you can also get hold of Dotster via social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter which usually offer customers a way to get a quick reply to simple questions.

If you live in the US, then you can also benefit from a toll-free 24/7 telephone number if you are signed up to any of the ultra hosting plans. However, there is an alternative number available for all the other plans that Dotster offer.

  • Toll-Free Number
  • Social Media Contacts
  • Knowledge Base
  • Ticket System
  • Video Tutorials
  • Toll-Free only for Premium Plans
  • Slow response times reported

Pricing

Simple and Affordable Price Range

There are 3 different plans to choose from under their shared hosting platform, under both Windows and Linux systems. The Windows hosting solutions are slightly more expensive which is an industry standard.

For the cheapest plan you can get basic hosting with Linux for as little as $3.75 per month with the ultra hosting plan costing $13.75. For each of the alternative Windows plans you just need to add an extra $1 per month on the 3 tiered plans.

User-Friendly

Linux and Windows Plan: Some with CPanel, Some Not

It’s a bit of a 50/50 here with Dotster because they do offer the ever reliable and user-friendly CPanel control panel option to its customers, however you need to be taking out the VPS plans to be able to access it.

For the general Shared Hosting plans that run across Linux and Windows systems, you will get a Dotster custom control panel, which isn’t the most user-friendly of control panels and will take every user some time to get to grips with it.

Summary

The Hosting Platform For Beginners & Mid-Range Companies

For the basic user, Dotster offers basic features and tools to help plant the foundations for any mid-range website. If you are looking for more innovation and better features that dig deeper, then perhaps Doster isn’t for you.

The support offered is varied and offers customers the opportunity to delve into a plethora of contact methods and helpful articles or video tutorials, topped off by social media channels where you can get quick-time responses.

Finally Dotster offers perks such as marketing credits, which can lure in customers. Overall, they offer a decent service, for a decent price.

Pros

  • Good Support Channels
  • Website and Server Backups, Redundancy Power
  • Cheap Hosting Solutions
  • Windows & Linux options

Cons

  • Toll-Free number only for premium subscribers
  • No CPanel on cheaper tiers
  • No Uptime stats
  • Lack of in-depth features
