Today, we had the chance to speak to Mr. Fuad, from DomaiNesia.

What is the history of DomaiNesia? When did you start the company?

Things started back in 2009 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

early team consisted of young and internet-savvy people who were very excited about the potential of the Internet and really wanted to get involved in the industry. We created a lot of websites, blogs, and joined online community forums. We then realized that it’s just a matter of time before people and businesses realize that they would need a digital presence to be able to connect to the internet users.

More people were seeking to create their digital presence, mainly through websites. Current hosting providers, primarily in Indonesia, simply didn’t solve many problems faced by customers. Recognizing the problems and opportunities, we then tried to create our own solutions. Our experience in managing websites and servers proved really useful, so we decided to open a hosting business. After several years, our company grew considerably and now we have more than 200.000 customers.


What were the challenges that you faced over the years?

We have been operating for more than 12 years now. During that time, there were a lot of challenges that we faced. One of the main challenges is to keep our high standard of service level while faced with growing numbers of customers, servers, and team members. We need to create a scalable framework that enables us to deliver the best experiences in every detail and every phase to our customers.


What are the main products and services that DomaiNesia is offering?

We offer a range of Web Hosting services, Domains, Cloud servers, Email, and SSL certificates. We constantly try to improve on our offerings and our Research & Development team never stops doing their work, so our range of products always changes over time. Most of our customers are small and midsize businesses (SMBs), and end-users for their personal projects.

Can you tell us a bit more about your Cloud VPS Hosting solution?

Our Cloud VPS Hosting solution is uniquely developed by our team. Under the hood, it’s a cluster of servers that connect to each other to form a Cloud cluster. We leverage a lot of kinds of Open Source software to build the cluster. Starting from the Cloud orchestrator to the Software-defined Storage, we make sure that it is truly scalable and highly available.

Each Cloud VPS instance data is triple replicated (3x replication) across servers, so we maintain high tolerance of hardware failure, end-to-end data integrity, and achieve high availability. While doing so, our typical customer can still get a very fast storage speed (1.5 GB/s), very low latency (0.2 ms), and more than 100.000 IOPS — in short: It’s blazing fast!

Currently, we have a location in Jakarta (Indonesia) with 10G connectivity, but we might open in other locations in the future.


How is your company handling customer satisfaction? What is your approach?

We take matters related to customer satisfaction seriously. We have an approach of “Deliver more than expected”, which means we always try to exceed customer expectations. The next thing is about Customer Support, it’s what makes customers stick. We prefer quick responses and focus on finding solutions to customers’ needs and problems they face. We also have various product documentation and tutorials to help them solve problems on their own.


What makes a customer happy when it comes to hosting services?

When it comes to hosting services, of course, the quality of service has to be top-notch. Besides that, several other things that we really consider related to customer happiness:

A lot of customers care about the speed and the security of their website. Can you tell us how do you handle the speed and the protection of your customer’s websites?

    We customize our web server based on Nginx/OpenResty to suit our needs. It enables us to create exclusive features, such as integration with the PageSpeed module and user-configurable cache.

    Web Server Cache combined with Application cache using Redis and Memcached instances accelerate websites on multiple levels.
  • Modern hardware
    We leverage AMD EPYC™ processors with high numbers of CPU cores to power our servers and NVMe SSD to store user data.
  • High bandwidth, low latency
    Our 10G bandwidth with servers located close to our customers removes any network bottlenecks.

Security, on the other hand, cannot be ignored because the risk of cyber-attacks increases each day. We implement several layers of security in order to minimize the attack surface and mitigate cyber-attacks.

What are the new trends and technologies that DomaiNesia is particularly interested in in the following year? Is there any new feature that you are planning to incorporate?

We are interested in several technologies to improve our products and services and expand our offerings in the near future:

  • Container-based hosting (e.g. Docker)
  • Geo-replication for Disaster Recovery service
  • Block Storage
  • NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) and RDMA


Where do you see DomaiNesia in the next 5 years in terms of growth?

Over the last 10 years, we have consistently achieved considerably high growth. We expect to continue maintaining our growth in the next 5 years by expanding our range of products to cater to more markets while keeping our high standard of service level for our customers.


In the end, is there any advice that you would like to share with our readers and the hosting community?

Well, over the last decade, the hosting industry kept growing at a very high pace. In recent years, we have started to see not only the industry getting mature but also faced with market saturation. In the upcoming years, it will be a challenge for the hosting industry to come up with new innovations. Now

there’s a trend towards decentralization and web3, while it hasn’t really been able to gain a meaningful impact on the internet as we know it, it is certain that things always change, and we hope it’s for the better.
