Many people avoid logging into the cPanel account of their hosting plan and directly use FTP to upload or download a few files. When there are so many FTP connections from a single IP address, FileZilla starts showing the ‘420 too many connections’ error.
In this tutorial, you will learn about solutions for fixing such an error and use FileZilla without any issues. There are two different methods you can use to fix the 420 too many connections error.
What's The Reason behind Getting A Connection Error?
Before you learn about solutions, you should know what FileZilla displays as an error for so many connections. When a client makes more than 8 connections to the FTP server of their hosting company using the same IP address without closing older connections, such an error occurs.
Sometimes, due to wrong settings, when you try to connect FileZilla to your FTP server, it's considered as a connection, but not successful. So, please ensure that you set it up properly.
Here is an error message you might get:
"Response: 421 Too many connections (8) from this IP Error: Could not connect to the server."
You can fix it by refreshing all FTP connections using your cPanel account or by increasing the number of connections from FileZilla.
Method 1). Use cPanel to Increase Refresh Connections.
Here are a few steps to follow:
1). Log into your hosting account and open cPanel.
2). Under "Files", you can find "FTP Connections". Please click to open it.
For some hosting companies, cPanel might be a little bit different. So, if you don't find the FTP connections options under Files, please scroll down to find it.
3). Once you open it, you will see all the active FTP connections. Click on "Reload" to refresh all connections.
On the right of each connection, you can also find a "Disconnect" link that you can use to disconnect all connections and connect FileZilla from scratch.
After disconnecting an FTP connection, you will see a message.
Method 2). Increase FTP Connections from FileZilla
Sometimes, a few companies don't allow access to the cPanel dashboard. So, this is an alternative method that you use to increase connections by more than 8.
Here are a few steps to follow:
1). Open FileZilla and look for the File Manager option. It might vary, depending on the operating system you use. For iOS, you can find an icon.
For Windows, you might see options like File, Edit, etc. So, if you click on File, you can see File Manager or Site Manager.
2). Click on "My Sites" from the left-sidebar and open the "Transfer Settings" tab.
NOTE: Many host companies require you to have their Business or a higher plan than you have to change this setting.
If your settings area isn't greyed out, check the box for "Limit number of simultaneous connections" and select more than 8 for "Maximum number of connections".
Click on "Ok" to save settings.
Once you do it, even if there are old connections with wrong settings, you will be able to connect FileZilla to the FTP server of your hosting.
However, you can't disconnect old connections using FileZilla. For that, you have to use your cPanel account.
In this tutorial, you have learned about fixing the ‘420 too many connections error’ using two different ways. I suggest you always use the first method because it has an option to remove older connections.
It's not possible to find out which connections have the wrong setting. So, it's always a good idea to disconnect older connections and establish a new one.
