For a WordPress beginner, it can be hard to understand the difference between a domain and an addon domain. Most of the people fret talking about addon domains.
Well, let me simplify it for you. When you host only one website on your web hosting server, you don't need to worry about addon domains.
But when you host multiple websites on the same web hosting server, you require to understand that, apart from your primary domain, all the extra domains you add are addon domains.
Let's say you have example.com as your current website and you want to host yoursite.com on the same server, to do so; you need to add yoursite.com as your addon domain.
You may have a question as if what's the best way to add an addon domain. This tutorial is going to walk you through a step by step process to add, delete, modify, and redirect an addon domain.
I must let you know that you need to use cPanel. As you know, almost every web hosting company offers access to cPanel.
Learn to Add an Addon Domain Using cPanel
If you're a cPanel beginner, you may fret because there are many options, which can be confusing for the starting. But you don't need to worry; I will help you understand all.
Have you ever tried to learn about cPanel? I hope your web hosting offers it.
Follow the steps.
Login to your cPanel account and search for the Domains' section. Click on the Addon Domains icon to add a new addon domain.
If you see a different cPanel layout, it's because every company uses a different design template. The company like Bluehost has its design in Blue, Siteground is using a different page template, Digital Ocean also offers an interactive cPanel.
You can see a few fields to fill out for creating an addon domain.
Before you proceed, you can check the available addon domain by scrolling down. As you can see, I don't have any addon domain, but once I add it, it starts appearing.
Fill out the details.
- New Domain Name (Fill your domain name, for example, yoursite.com)
- Subdomain (You can leave it empty)
- Document Root ( Once you fill in the domain name, it will automatically fetch the root. If you want, you can change it.)
- FTP Checkbox: If you're willing to create an FTP account associated with your new domain, tick the checkbox.
After filling all the details, click on the Add Domain button.
On this new page, you can see the notification and the name of your addon domain. Click on Go Back to see the status of your addon domain.
I have shown you earlier, no addon domain was here, but now you can see the list.
How to Redirect an Addon Domain
Sometimes, WordPress users add an addon domain to redirect it to somewhere else, it's the matter of choice.
For example, if you added an addon domain earlier, but you want it to redirect to a new domain, you can use such an option.
Click on the Manage Redirection link.
On this new page, you can see a box to add the URL of the page, to which you want to redirect the addon domain. The best part is that most of the web hosting companies display an example below.
You can read the note; it explains what's a redirect. Click on the Save button to complete your task of making a redirection.
How to Delete an Addon Domain
If you check the current addon domain list, you can see an option to Remove with a delete symbol, click and you can see a new page.
Asking for the authentication is essential, and that's why you have to confirm by clicking on the Remove button, once you do it, you can see a notification.
I had also created a subdomain, so the message is displaying it. Click on the Go Back link to see the status, and you can see no addon domain on the list.
All the steps mentioned above can be used to add, modify root, manage redirection, and delete an addon domain. I hope your confusion between a domain and addon domain is apparent now.
Every time I read something new, I try to learn more about it. During my starting days, I was so confused between a domain name, subdomain, parked domain, and an addon domain.
I hope you can easily manage an addon domain while hosting your primary domain, you can create a subdomain using it, just like I did in the example.
