Have you ever heard of StableHost? It’s a small hosting company with roughly 15 employees. Their care for your website and your needs is the primary thing that separates them from the “mega-brands.”
Its team considers support as an essential factor when it comes to choosing a web hosting provider. So, they exclusively employ people with a passion for hosting. I guess that’s how they got an “Excellent” 4.9 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot.
It is a privately-owned entity since 2009. Over the years, they have reinvested their revenues back into the business to offer new features to their customers. Better yet, they carry no debt, which seems promising.
StableHost offers Shared Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting, Enterprise Web Hosting, Unlimited Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Virtual Private Servers, SiteLock, Domain Names, SSL Certificates, Security Audit, and VPN.
With so many different hosting packages to choose from, chances are, you will find one that suits your needs.
Now, you might be wondering why did I choose StableHost for my expert review today? To be honest, I stumbled upon something they wrote on their site, “You’re not just a number to us; you’re part of the StableHost family.” It got my attention, so I want to check what it means.
Does StableHost provide the needed qualities to back this statement? Can you, as the end-user, entirely rely on their services, uptime, security, and support? Let’s get to testing!
Getting Started with StableHost
As soon as you visit StableHost’s website, you will get a warm welcome and a relaxing feel. I have to admit, I like the green color, and it predominates on StableHost's site.
At first sight, it’s a simple and easy-to-use interface. You can find the language setting option in the top right corner and choose from English, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Vietnamese.
If you scroll a bit down, you’ll immediately find the web hosting plans. But, not to rush to purchase, I will navigate through the site a bit more.
At the bottom of the home page, you can find all that StableHost has to offer.
Within the cPanel, StableHost offers Unlimited MySQL Databases and FTP Accounts, Webalizer, Analog & Awstats, Free Website Builder, Softaculous (1-Click Scripts), R1Soft Daily Backups, and Let’s Encrypt Certificates.
Regarding email features, you can benefit from unlimited email accounts, forwards, autoresponders, and mailing lists. Furthermore, StableHost offers Virus / Spam Filtering, IMAP and POP3, Port 25/26 SMTP, Online WebMail, and SSL POP3, IMAP & SMTP.
StableHost’s servers start at 32GB RAM, feature SSD drives, Unlimited Bandwidth, Clustered DNS by Cloudflare, and SSH Access at an additional fee.
Better yet, you can find suitable development tools, such as PHP 7.x and 8 Support, MariaDB / MySQL, Perl, Python, Server Side, and Git. In turn, you can create your website as you have always imagined it.
Now, onto my favorite part – shopping for a web hosting-related service!
As mentioned, I can choose from a variety of plans with StableHost. As per usual, I will settle for the most basic option, and that’s standard web hosting in this case.
Once you click on ‘Web Hosting’ in the Main Menu, you’ll see the following screen. At the time of my purchase, these plans were at 50% off. Am I lucky or overly strategic? I’ll leave that a mystery.
StableHost offers three web hosting plans – Starter, Pro, and Platinum. It further specifies the intended use for each program, which I (from a beginner’s standpoint) find especially helpful.
If you scroll down, you will get to a comparison table for the three web hosting plans.
You can benefit from unlimited disk space and bandwidth, Site Builder, 24/7/365 email and live chat support, script troubleshooting, and DDoS Protection – 2Gbit/s in each plan.
The Starter plan supports one website, while the remaining two unlimited number of websites.
Furthermore, you can set up up to 500 accounts and 250,000 files (INodes), 1 Full CPU Core, and 25 MySQL Connections on the Starter and the Pro plan. Also, both come with a 99.9% SLA.
The Platinum plan is the only one with VIP support, 50 accounts per server, 500,000 files (INodes), two full CPUs, 50 MySQL Connections, 99.99% SLA, Hacked/Compromised Repair, and SpamExperts Spam Filtering.
The features within the Starter plan are enough for my needs. So, to save a few bucks, I will go for that option. Furthermore, I like to test what each provider offers at the minimum level.
I clicked on ‘Sign Up Now’ on the Starter Plan. Here, I can place my order.
You can enter a new domain or transfer an existing one. Then, in the square on the right, you can choose the term.
You can choose from a month, three, six, twelve, twenty, or thirty-six months. As usual, the long-term plans come with better discounts. But I’m not too fond of commitment. So, I will go for the monthly option.
At first, I wanted to transfer my existing domain. But it was too expensive. Then, I went for the second option. I purchased a new domain. StableHost disappointed me at this point. It doesn’t provide for free domains within the web hosting plans, even though most providers do.
Here’s how my order looked like after adding the domain. Something still doesn’t add up. So, I clicked on ‘Review Your Order,’ only to realize the site automatically adds SSH access for a year as a paid add-on.
The second step of the registration looks like this.
Here, you can extend the period for domain registration to up to ten years. You can also review the hosting plans and add-ons within your basket and choose a hosting location.
StableHost offers several hosting locations - in Sweden, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Singapore.
You can also apply a coupon code at this point if you have one. Unfortunately, I don’t. So, I will proceed to payment.
When you continue to Check Out, you will get to step three – Login/Create Account.
After filling in the required information, you’ll find this message. Or, let me better express myself, it will find you.
I went to my email to check what’s going on. I got an email ‘Welcome to StableHost.’
As you can see, StableHost might take up to 12 hours to approve my account, as they manually review for fraud. So, now we wait.
Setting Things up at StableHost
Here I am, a day later. I still haven’t received an email approving my account. So, I went to log in to StableHost, only to realize I have no active products/services. It means they haven’t approved it yet, and I cannot seem to understand why.
I clicked on ‘View All’ in Your Active Products/Services. Here’s where it led me. My service is classified as fraud.
I went on to contact customer support as the only way to solve this issue. At all times, while you are on StableHost, you can notice a green live chat option in the bottom right corner. Now is the time to use it.
The StableHost team will simultaneously assist me via live chat and email. Let’s see how it will work.
Not a great start, I have to say. “15 m ago. Not seen yet” somehow doesn’t sit right with me when a provider specifies under 5 minutes response time.
Half an hour later, I got a response.
It was a great response. As soon as I clicked on the link, all I needed to do was pay.
No problems here!
I entered my credit card information once again at Checkout, and that was all about it. Now that my Invoice is paid, I can proceed to test.
I already showed you the Client Area. Here’s how it looks once you log in to StableHost. Only this time, I have an active service.
You can find several tabs within the Menu, Home, Services, Domains, Billing, Support, and Open Ticket.
In the top right corner, you can also check your Notifications or Account Settings.
In Services, you can find your services, order new services, or view available add-ons.
I clicked on Active to check what can I do with my existing web hosting plan.
Here, you can log in to Webmail or cPanel, upgrade/downgrade your plan, request cancellation, change your domain name or password.
You can also find quick shortcuts, options to create an email account, billing overview, and configurable options if you scroll down.
I instantly went on with the cPanel featuring the new style, Glass. I have to admit; I like it.
StableHost’s cPanel consists of Services, Email, Files, Databases, SiteLock Services, Domains, Metrics, Security, Software, Advanced, Preferences, and the Softaculous Apps Installer.
You can find the Site Builder in Services.
Email Accounts, Forwarders, Email Routing, Autoresponders, Default Addresses, Mailing Lists, Track Delivery, Global Email Filters, and Email Filters are all part of the Email section. Here, you can also find Email Deliverability, Address Importer, Spam Filters, Configure Greylisting, Calendars and Contacts, and Email Disk Usage.
Files consist of File Manager, Images, Directory Privacy, Disk Usage, Web Disk, FTP Accounts, Backup, Backup Wizard, Git Version Control, and R1Soft Restore Backups.
phpMyAdmin, MySQL Databases, MySQL Database Wizard, and Remote MySQL are part of the Databases category.
Sitelock is part of SiteLock Services.
Site Publisher, Domains, Addon Domains, Subdomains, Aliases, Redirects, Zone Editor, and Dynamic DNS are all part of the Domains section.
Metrics covers Visitors, Errors, Bandwidth, Raw Access, Awstats, Webalizer, Webalizer FTP, Metrics Editor, and Resource Usage.
Security covers SSH Access, IP Blocker, SSL/TLS and Status, Manage API Tokens, Hotlink Protection, Leech Protection, ModSecurity, and Let’s Encrypt SSL.
The Software category consists of Cloudflare, Application Manager, WordPress Manager by Softaculous, MultiPHP Manager, PHP PEAR Packages, Softaculous Apps Installer, Perl Modules, Select PHP Version, Site Software, and Optimize Website.
Advanced consists of Cron Jobs, Virus Scanner, Track DNS, Indexes, Error Pages, Apache Handlers, and MIME Types.
Password & Security, Change Language, Change Style, Contact Information, and User Manager are part of Preferences.
WordPress, Joomla, AbanteCart, phpBB, SMF, WHMCS, Open Real Estate, MyBB, Dolphin, pH7CMS, Laravel, OpenCart, Concrete CMS, and ClipBucket are part of Scripts.
Categories cover Blogs, Portals/CMS, Forums, Image Galleries, Wikis, Social Networking, Ad Management, Calendars, Gaming, Mails, Polls and Analytics, Project Management, E-Commerce, ERP, Guest Books, Customer Support, Frameworks, Educational, DB Tools, Music, Video, RSS, File Management, Others, and Libraries.
Within Services, you can also change your Domain name.
If you click on Order New Services, you will get to the following screen. Here, you can purchase web hosting plans, Reseller Hosting, Secure VPN, SSL Certificates, VPS Hosting, SiteLock Website Security, Dedicated Servers SE, and Product Add-ons.
I already explained the web hosting plans. Here’s what you will get with the remaining options.
StableHost offers three Reseller plans, Reseller Basic, Reseller Plus, and Reseller Pro. You can get up to 50 clients, 60 GB Disk Space, and host up to 100 clients with the most expensive option.
StableHost offers five different VPS Hosting plans, with up to 8 CPU Cores, 16,384MB Memory, 300GB HD, and 16TB Bandwidth.
In turn, the dedicated servers feature up to Intel Xeon E5-2603 v3 1.6GHz 6C, 16 GB RAM, 2 x 300 GB SAS Hard drives, 4 TB Traffic, and 0 or 1 RAID.
StableHost provides a single product add-on, SSH Access. It’s a one-time purchase providing you the option to make changes to your website via a command-line interface.
Next to Services, you can find Domains, consisting of My Domains, Register a New Domain, Transfer Domains to Us, and Domain Search.
Keep in mind; your domain needs to be active so that you can manage it.
Now, onto Domain Registration. I have to say, StableHost is genuinely superior in this regard. You can choose from hundreds of extensions and browse by category.
Depending on your niche, you can classify the domains and find the best suited for your site. It’s a fast, easy, and incredibly entertaining process.
If you already own a domain, you can transfer it to StableHost. However, they charge you for this service, as they extend your domain by one year.
Next, Billing covers Invoices, Quotes, Mass Payment, Manage PayPal, and Payment Methods.
The following tab (and last one) is Support, but more on that later.
Performance, Speed, and Uptime
StableHost offers clustered hosting. In turn, it eliminates single points of failure, increases the availability of your website and other web services beyond that of ordinary single server hosting.
It combines over 100 SSD Drives, Automatic IO Re-allocation, Automatic Node Failover, and Smart Load Balancing.
Now, while a single server can require periodic reboots for software upgrades and the like, a clustered platform can stagger the restarts. In other words, it allows you to upgrade all necessary machines in the cluster while the service is still available for site visitors.
In a way, it’s similar to cloud hosting since it provides you resources of many machines to use on-demand. As a user, you can benefit from significant scalability in this regard.
StableHost offers a 99.9% uptime guarantee in all its shared and reseller hosting services, protecting you from the ramifications of downtime. It means that if there is a month that StableHost doesn’t keep your site online 99.9% of the time, they will credit you for the downtime.
See, uptime is essential when it comes to business success. You wouldn’t like to “repel” your customers by greeting them with a dysfunctional site. However, that’s not where it ends.
You also need to check the response time of your server and the load time of your pages. After all, no one likes waiting for a site to start working suddenly. StableHost is pretty average in this regard.
Still, StableHost has significantly improved its site performance with the addition of the Litespeed Web Servers, the industry’s leading high-performance, highly scalable offerings. The change of Apache to Litespeed is even more noticeable if you have a larger site with more traffic.
More precisely, StableHost offers LiteSpeed servers in Phoenix, Arizona, Chicago, Illinois, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Singapore, Singapore. In turn, it has Apache servers in Stockholm, Sweden, Singapore, Singapore (both options available), Valencia, Spain, and Frankfurt, Germany.
Level of Support at StableHost
The StableHost technical team is available 24/7/265 to assist you with all quests. See, I waited a while for a response on the live chat (approximately 30 minutes). Still, I got excellent guidance, so I am a bit divided in this regard. They might not be as fast as they claim, but they are sure of great quality.
Even when you are not logged in to the Client Area (don’t have a StableHost service), you can still contact their team via live chat, phone, or email. Furthermore, the StableHost is available on social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter.
Within the Client Area, you can find the options to open a ticket or access the Knowledgebase.
The Knowledge base is sure a comprehensive one. It covers different aspects of the StableHost operation, such as Pre-Sales & General FAQ, Technical Support, Account Support, Domains, Affiliates, and Policies.
If you click on Tickets, it takes you to the live chat feature with all your past conversations with StableHost agents.
At last, I would like to check the refund policy for those unsatisfied with StableHost’s services.
StableHost offers a 45-day money-back guarantee on new shared web hosting accounts, excluding domain registration fees and add-ons. So, if you are not satisfied with its service, you can cancel your account within 45 days of signup via the billing control panel and contact its team.
However, StableHost doesn’t offer any form of refunds on VPS servers or second accounts (only first-time accounts).
Let me try and get a refund. You can find the option in My Services if you click on Active for the service you wish to cancel. Then, ‘Request Cancellation.’
Once you describe your reason for cancellation, you can declare the reason you are canceling the service, rate StableHost’s support for the service, and declare whether the service met or exceeded your expectations.
Security and Backups
As mentioned, you can find many security features within the cPanel. But it doesn’t end there.
StableHost offers four Secure VPN plans. You can get up to unlimited bandwidth, six devices, and AES-256 encryption.
You can also choose from four different SSL Certificates, AlphaSSL SSL Certificate, Comodo Multi-Domain, Comodo EV Certificate, and Comodo Wildcard Certificate.
SiteLock Website Security automatically detects and removes malware from your website. With the individual cybersecurity products and solutions that SiteLock offers, you can focus on the more essential aspects of your business.
You can get a one-time scan/fix with the SiteLock 911 plan. You can get a SecureWeb plan for one, two, or three years. Finally, StableHost offers three SecureWeb Advanced WAF/CDN plans, once again, for one, two, or three years.
Now, these SiteLock opportunities come from the Client Area within my web hosting plan.
However, you can also get SiteLock Website Security from StableHost’s homepage. The company provides three plans, Secure Web, Secure Web Plus, and Emergency Clean.
All three plans come with online reputation monitoring and a SiteLock Trust Seal.
SiteLock constantly scans for various threats such as malware, SQL injections, cross-site scripting, and more. The scan also covers CMS and eCommerce applications.
Furthermore, SiteLock automatically removes the malicious code and patches the CMS core, plugins, and eCommerce solutions.
StableHost’s Web Application Firewall (WAF) protects your website and web applications from cyberthreats and harmful traffic, including OWASP’s top 10 threats that penetrate websites across the globe.
At last, the CDN within the Secure Web Plus adds improved SEO rankings, increased website speeds, and reduced bandwidth consumption to the offer.
StableHost offers Malware Scanning, Vulnerability Scanning, Predictive Risk Score, Malware Removal, Vulnerability Remediation, CDN, WAF, and DDoS Protection.
As for the backups, StableHost provides R1Soft daily backups on all shared and reseller web hosting servers. Every night, the company backs up your entire account, including all databases, and stores them for 14 days. If you need to recover your data, you can click on the R1Soft icon in cPanel and select which files you would like to recover.
Still, the company encourages its customers to keep their backups for extra assurance.
Specific Features of StableHost
The question at this point is, what makes StableHost stand out? Which features make it a superior hosting provider or convince you to purchase its services over any other market participant?
Here’s a list of StableHost’s top features:
- Unique Clustered Hosting
- User-Friendly cPanel
- High-Quality Hardware On All Its Servers
- Enterprise-Grade SSD Drives, 96G Of Memory And Dual CPUs
- Customized Versions Of PHP, Litespeed, and MySQL
- Fast Load Time and 99.9% Uptime Guarantee
- Litespeed Webserver (2x Faster Than Apache)
- Free Let’s Encrypt SSL In All Plans
- Unlimited Bandwidth, MySQL Databases, and FTP Accounts
- Over 450 1-Click Apps With Softaculous
- Unlimited Email Hosting Features
- Premium Spamfiltering
- Other Superior Security-Enhancing Features
- E-Commerce Functionality
- Free Migration Of Websites To StableHost Dedicated Servers
- 24/7 Email And Phone Support For Clients
StableHost comes with several attention-grabbing qualities. For instance, you can benefit from daily backup, unlimited email hosting options, a SiteBuilder, SSL, and so on. Yet, it doesn’t have overly unique features that make it stand out from the crowd.
It’s a small company with a dedicated in-house team. It sure has an attractive site design and reliable cluster hosting. Undoubtedly, you can expect at least average response and load times (if not superior). Also, StableHost offers a 99.9% uptime guarantee in all its hosting plans, which is pretty convincing.
Furthermore, StableHost is an easy-to-use solution, even for first-time users. It comes with the user-friendly cPanel and 1-click installs of over 450 apps. However, most of its options are unmanaged. So, if you go for a VPS or a dedicated server, you will need some technical expertise to get you going.
StableHost also offers superior customer support, accessible over live chat, email, or phone. They consider it as a competitive advantage, but I wouldn’t say the same thing. See, I waited half an hour for a response on live chat. Basically, the point of the feature is instant support, which I cannot say I got.
Also, they specify 12 hours as the needed time to approve an account, and even a day later, I haven’t got a response. If you remember (or paid attention in the review), they classified my service as fraud. I had to log in to discover the issue, as they didn’t even notify me about it. So, as mentioned, I am a bit unsure of how to rate their support. They are super-friendly, experienced, and helpful. Still, they need to improve their response time.
As for the pricing, StableHost can once again improve. See, what I like is transparency, and they don’t offer it. During my first-time purchase, they added an add-on (without my consent) to the cart. Also, the company doesn’t provide free domain registration nor transfers. To be honest, almost all web hosting providers currently do, which is a significant disadvantage for StableHost.
