Deceptive Billing Practises

When I purchased a business hosting plan with unlimited (ie. FREE) web domains nearly 10 yrs ago, I felt it was a good deal. I auto renewed my domains under the hosting plan and continued this way for some time. However after a...Read More number of years I realized the value I was getting for the money was not equal to what other services were providing so I started to slowly migrate my services away from Netfirms. This spring, I began working on preparing the final migration of my last two domains that are actively hosted on the platform. Turned all the domains to manual bill and rec'd auth codes to transfer them elsewhere. Rec'd email confirmations of this from Netfirms and even a email reminder that my domains would expire if I didn't take immediate action. This happened on May 3 2021. Unbeknownst to me, on May 13, 2021 Netfirms billed me for hosting while having ZERO domains under their platform!! Let me repeat...I had ZERO domains under my profile and the last two that I transferred out were acquired free under the hosting plan. I never paid extra for those domains to renew annually as they were tied to the hosting. Their deceptive billing knowing that I had zero domains to host on their platform triggered a negative balance with Paypal, which is how I had my billing set up. Eventually this caused my Paypal account to be locked as I wasn't aware of this outstanding payment as I believed my services ported out. When I brought the matter up to Netfirms asking for full refund/partial credit for the time remaining, in true fashion they tried to blame ME for not calling them to cancel the hosting plan!!! WTF? What is a backend self-service portal for?? If I move a domain which is directly associated to the hosting plan, then that should trigger the hosting plan to also stop or at least some sort of email communication that my hosting plan would be disrupted. But that must be too hard to implement or at least show some level of customer service or care...Then they tried to say that I had 30 days for a money-backed guarantee had I called about this sooner...yah right. Oh, and to actually locate the screen where you can cancel your subscription is buried so deep without any direct /accessible link proves that they want to make it extremely difficult for you to cancel. When you select the immediate cancellation option, coincidentally no where does it say your billing will also stop immediately. 10+ yrs loyalty and this is what you get. Stay away from them. not worth the headache and they are too damn expensive compared to what you can get elsewhere.Less

Only for domain hosting, nothing else

I've used Netfirms for probably two decades now, and I own about 8 domain names. Registering domain names with them is easy and fine, and they auto-renew, which works well for me.

Over the years they have upgraded their user in...Read Moreterface to be a little better and friendly, but it's still very hard to find what you're looking for. And their customer support sucks. I wanted to use them for Google Workspace because they offer a cheaper rate, but after exchanging one message with customer service trying to solve a problem, I never heard back from them. You really have to get on chat or the phone in order to resolve your issue.

But I have never had issues with downtime on any of my websites and it's fairly easy to make changes to nameservers and things like that.

False Advertising for Money-Back Guarantee

When purchasing a domain from Netfirms, they advertise that they offer a 30-day money back guarantee. When looking to exercise a money back option, Netfirms states that it is only offered for hosting. Even though the ad runs promi...Read Morenently on the domain checkout (with not link to click on or disclaimers present). I have a screenshot of the checkout page but cannot figure out how to upload it here. Below is the chat from Netfirms. I should have read these reviews before purchasing as I would have seen their lack of support. I want to emphasize while you read the chat, that the checkout screen for DOMAIN PURCHASES offers the money-back guarantee and there is no mention of only-domain hosting. Federal Trading Commission states that "Under the law, claims in advertisements must be truthful, cannot be DECEPTIVE OR UNFAIR, and must be evidence-based."
Chat below:

Me: I was offered a 30 day money back guarantee on the website. I want to exercise that on a few of my domains that I registered.

• Justin joined

• Justin: Hi. Welcome to Chat Support!

• Me: Hi

• Justin: The 30 day money back guarantee is applicable only for the hosting. It is not applicable for the domains
Once the domain is registered or renewed, you cannot cancel it. It will be valid till its expiration

• Me: That is a misleading ad.
I'm on the page at domain checkout and at the top of the screen it clearly says "Satisfaction Guaranteed Netfirms offers a 30-day money-back guarantee."
On the domain checkout page.

• Justin: I'm sorry, it is only for the hosting.

• Me: Is Netfirms US based?

• Justin: Yes, we are US based

• Me: What is the government agency that regulates advertising for consumer protection?
Found it. FTC. On their website the first line states " Under the law, claims in advertisements must be truthful, cannot be deceptive or unfair, and must be evidence-based."

• Justin: Click on 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee to get the information
It will show the exact information: https://www.netfirms.com/popups/ip_pop_features.bml?type=mbg

• Me: There is no clickable link on the checkout page.

• Justin: You can check our TOS of domain registration here: https://www.netfirms.com/legal/legal-domain.html

• Me: That's not clear and identifiable from the checkout page. Consumers go to purchase a domain and are exposed to a prominent badge and statement that says there is a 30 day money back guarantee. It does not state that first one should navigate the rest of the website to find a TOS on an entirely different page.

• Justin: I'm in the checkout page and there is no such advertisements for the domains
It is for the hosting plan

• Me: It does not state that.

• Justin: Alright, you can contact legal@netfirms.com for more information

Worst company ever!

Worst company ever! After 13 years of loyalty and 40 domains names, no recognition and discovered that they make many errors in the billing and they won't refund anything despite their error. Avoid this shitty company at all costs...Read More! even when they give you credit, you won’t be able to view the available credits in your account. Is this normal ? What a waste of money and time. This company has very questionable billing practices. I strongly dissuade anyway from using Netfirms.Less

Expert Overview

Great hosting company with a long history

Netfirms has been offering hosting services since 1998 and during this time has had a very strong reputation of providing great services.  They were bought out by Endurance International Group in 2011.  Endurance International Group is the largest hosting corporation in the world.  Some people have commented that services have gone downhill since then, but most others seem to think it is still a great hosting company.

They are currently hosting around 1.2 million websites, primarily in North America.  They are primarily focused on serving small businesses and individuals. They only have three hosting plans, all of which are shared hosting.  They offered VPS services as well in the past, but it seems that this has been phased out.

Like most shared hosting companies, they offer a set of features which starts out pretty basic and goes up as you choose a more advanced package.  All of the packages have unlimited disk space and bandwidth, however, so that is good.

Uptime & Reliability

Very reliable hosting

This hosting company has their own Tier 1 data center with over 40,000 servers housed within.  They have fully redundant power supplies, cooling systems and much more.  While they don't make a specific claim or guarantee regarding their up-time, they have a good reputation for being very stable.

In addition, since they have a top of the line data center and have kept up on maintaining it well, you won't likely have any problems with your sites going down.

Fairly basic options but they work well

You aren't going to be getting any innovative or unique features from this hosting company, but that is not really what they are going for.  They offer all the basic features that you'll get at any hosting company, and they seem to do a good job with them.

In addition to the unlimited disk space and bandwidth, you will also get a limited number of MySQL databases and FTP accounts (the number of them that you can get goes up based on the package you purchase).

One nice feature that you'll get is a free domain on the cheapest package, three free domains on the middle package and five free domain names on the highest one.  You can also get an e-commerce platform for an added price.

Great support with priority to premium members

You will get great technical support from this company.  They have a 24 hour per day toll-free number that you can call, or you can use their online services as well.  All customers get access to this great support, but they prioritize customers who signed up for the highest tier hosting package first, so that could cause some delays.

When you get to talk to a person they are typically knowledgeable and will be able to help you with any hosting issues you are having right away.

Prices are fairly standard for the services they provide

When you sign up for this hosting company you will get a nice package for a fair price.  They aren't setting the world on fire with great deals or anything, but you also don't have to dig around to find secret codes or anything to get a fair price.

You can pay monthly, or sign up for a 1, 2 or 3 year contract for a lower price.  All of this is fairly standard with most hosting companies today.

A nice hosting company for individuals and small businesses

Overall this is a nice company to work with.  They have great support, all the standard features, excellent up time and more.  While they aren't leading the way in any one category, they are providing a good service to their customers, which is really what most people will need.

  • Well established sine 1998 and backed by Endurance International Group
  • Great 24 hour per day technical support
  • Unlimited bandwidth and disk space
  • Free domain(s) at every package level
  • New clients are given $100 AdWords credit, $50 Facebook Ads credit, and $25 to Bing/Yahoo

  • Their sales page is not clear about things like the control panel they use
