I ran into trouble from the start. They advertised a great deal on domain names and they was no disclaimer saying only certain names were eligible. I bought one at the advertised price, but when I tried to register a second one th...Read Moree next day they attempted to charge me $125 for it. I should have known it wasn't going to get better.
Fast forward a year, I'm trying to log into my account and can't. I sent a password request and that's when the real trouble started. While claiming that security is important to them, they expect you to send private info, including a scan of your drivers license, over an unsecured connection. It took more than a week of going back and forth while they did nothing to improve the situation at all.
I have moved my domain to another registrar and I will never do business with them again.

I agree 100 percent. They get very upset and continue to send you emails just because you don't do any business with them. Money hungry mad men probably.

I am a 54 y/o man that runs a painting company in NJ. I also do web sites for clients part time. I have been a name.com customer for well over 8 years. I currently have 63 domains with them and had 63 associated web sites hosted o...Read Moren their servers.

On 01-27-2017, I received an email from Name.com which states: “The hosting for yourdomain***.com has been suspended. It was suspended because we received a verifiable spamming complaint. More specifically, info@yourdomain***.com” And this suspension came with no warning. To add, I have no idea what “verifiable spamming complaint” even means, as I am the last person in the world that would send spam.

I immediately called Name.com to find out (what in gods name), was wrong with my account. I spoke on the phone with one of their employees at great length. She stated, “your account has been permanently suspended for spamming”. I explained to her that I was in no way responsible for any form of spamming @mydomainname. I suggested that someone must have hacked into their system and sent email from my account. No one has access to my computer but me as I live alone, so spamming did not happen on my end. She stated, “there is nothing I can do, your hosting account has been permanently suspended”. And she gave me the feeling that she believed I was lying.

The end result - 63 of my web sites went offline, at the flip of Name.com’s incompetent hands, and they offered no solution.
Name.com (on a whim), has forced me to seek web hosting with a different company, and has caused loss of monies, loss of time and has caused much unnecessary stress and inconvenience. I will have to spend an estimate of 7 days, setting up 63 domains on a new server and uploading data for my 63 web sites.

I have found Name.com to be an Irresponsible, incompetent, unprofessional, unreliable and unfair service. This company has given me an unnecessary workload and has caused a major inconvenience in my life. I’d also like to add that on September 5, 2016 - I paid in full $203.88 for a (1) year hosting plan with Name.com and was forced to pay for a new hosting plan on January 25, 2017 with a different company. I have been sickened by this unprofessional company.

I have contacted my credit card company to do a chargeback and hopefully get my money refunded. However, the stress and inconvenience this has caused outweighs the expense.

Thoroughly disgusted and in disbelief,
Anthony

Hi Anthony (I'm not good in english, buy I'll try...) Maybe any of your sites had bad programmed contact form. That may cause abuse from hackers and spammers. You should check that, because it could cause you trouble in your new host too.

The moment their support opens, I get a message that their call volume is higher than normal. That's their default automated response. They have no 24 hour support. I had a domain down for an entire weekend one time due to their i...Read Morenternal processes as a reseller with SSL certificates. The final straw was an automated message that their entire support staff was in some sort of training meeting, and our only option was to email, which took days to get a response.

Name.com is good on price, but you will definitely pay for it. Think of using a mobile phone. Some services are like using Verizon or Sprint. Name.com is like using Cricket Wireless at best, and at their worst it's like using two cans and no string.

Expert Overview

Primarily a domain name registration company, but also offering shared hosting

Name.com is one of the larger domain name registrars in the market.  In addition to this, however, they also offer several shared hosting packages to their customers.  They don’t offer anything beyond shared hosting, but for those who only need this type of hosting, they do provide a high quality service.

Their hosting comes with all the standard features you would expect including MySQL databases, the ability to manage email addresses and spam protection.  The speed of their hosting is surprisingly high, especially for shared hosting.  This is an indication that they don’t overload their servers like so many shared companies seem to do these days.

Unlike some companies that offer hosting as a secondary business, Name.com seems to actually have put some effort into this service.  They keep their hardware and software up to date and provide nice support for their hosting customers.

Uptime & Reliability

99% uptime guarantee with few customer complaints

You’ll get a 99% uptime guarantee, though what type of credits you get if it drops below this point is unclear.  Most companies today are offering at least 99.9% guarantees too, which makes this one not quite as good.

Despite the questionable guarantee, however, they do provide a good, reliable hosting option to people who are running simple sites.  You don’t want to run a major corporation or even a mid-sized business here, but for personal blogs or entry level sites, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Features

Standard shared hosting features with very few extras

There is nothing really standing out in their feature list to speak of.  That being said, however, there are no features that are really missing either.  When it comes to basic web hosting on a shared server, they give you what you need.

One nice feature is their web stats option, which is provided on all packages.  While it doesn’t give any information that you couldn’t get from Google Analytics or another similar service, it is nice to have it built right in.  This is especially true for newer webmasters.

Support

Good support when you need it

They don’t specifically say when they have technical support available.  Their main toll free number is only active during the day, as is their main email contact.  They do have an online ticketing system that you can use, but it is not immediately clear when they will get back to you.  When you do get in touch with someone, their technicians seem to be skilled and able to resolve most issues quickly and easily.

Pricing

High base price that drops with longer agreements

The base price for their lowest shared hosting plan is $6.99 per month, but that drops down to $4.99 if you pay for a year up front.  If you need an SSL certificate, that costs another $9.99 per year on their first two packages, but it is included in their highest option.

They do have a full 30 day money back guarantee available, which is always nice to see.

Summary

Simple hosting tailored just for basic sites

While you certainly can’t compare this hosting company to many of the others out there, they aren’t trying to compete for the same business.  They want to give entry level webmasters a simple place where they can buy a domain and do the hosting all at once, and that is what they’ve done.  No huge benefits here, but no problems either.

Pros:

  • Simple hosting packages
  • Responsive support for both technical and customer service issues
  • Easy hosting when you buy a domain name from name.com

Cons:

  • Limited to shared hosting options
  • Web hosting is not their primary business
  • Hosting is not scalable to larger sites
