Primarily a domain name registration company, but also offering shared hosting
Name.com is one of the larger domain name registrars in the market. In addition to this, however, they also offer several shared hosting packages to their customers. They don’t offer anything beyond shared hosting, but for those who only need this type of hosting, they do provide a high quality service.
Their hosting comes with all the standard features you would expect including MySQL databases, the ability to manage email addresses and spam protection. The speed of their hosting is surprisingly high, especially for shared hosting. This is an indication that they don’t overload their servers like so many shared companies seem to do these days.
Unlike some companies that offer hosting as a secondary business, Name.com seems to actually have put some effort into this service. They keep their hardware and software up to date and provide nice support for their hosting customers.
Uptime & Reliability
99% uptime guarantee with few customer complaints
You’ll get a 99% uptime guarantee, though what type of credits you get if it drops below this point is unclear. Most companies today are offering at least 99.9% guarantees too, which makes this one not quite as good.
Despite the questionable guarantee, however, they do provide a good, reliable hosting option to people who are running simple sites. You don’t want to run a major corporation or even a mid-sized business here, but for personal blogs or entry level sites, you shouldn’t have any issues.
Standard shared hosting features with very few extras
There is nothing really standing out in their feature list to speak of. That being said, however, there are no features that are really missing either. When it comes to basic web hosting on a shared server, they give you what you need.
One nice feature is their web stats option, which is provided on all packages. While it doesn’t give any information that you couldn’t get from Google Analytics or another similar service, it is nice to have it built right in. This is especially true for newer webmasters.
Good support when you need it
They don’t specifically say when they have technical support available. Their main toll free number is only active during the day, as is their main email contact. They do have an online ticketing system that you can use, but it is not immediately clear when they will get back to you. When you do get in touch with someone, their technicians seem to be skilled and able to resolve most issues quickly and easily.
High base price that drops with longer agreements
The base price for their lowest shared hosting plan is $6.99 per month, but that drops down to $4.99 if you pay for a year up front. If you need an SSL certificate, that costs another $9.99 per year on their first two packages, but it is included in their highest option.
They do have a full 30 day money back guarantee available, which is always nice to see.
Simple hosting tailored just for basic sites
While you certainly can’t compare this hosting company to many of the others out there, they aren’t trying to compete for the same business. They want to give entry level webmasters a simple place where they can buy a domain and do the hosting all at once, and that is what they’ve done. No huge benefits here, but no problems either.
Simple hosting packages
Responsive support for both technical and customer service issues
Easy hosting when you buy a domain name from name.com
Do not hire this hosting, it will happen very badly.
I remember before hiring the services of this company, an advisor of them told me that his support was better than GoDaddy, at that time I believed them and decided to give them a chance because he had already had several bad experiences with GoDaddy, but I'm wrong it was a big disappointment. A Ticket to emergencies reported from one day in the morning and spend the day and not show their faces.
Almost 100,000 lost data from my MySQL database by an internal fault of them never gave me an explanation, which fell several times a day. As I did reports to support 4 times, and never a ticket was answered with an explanation.
In Name.com Fan Page on Facebook I was told that a consultant had already sent a reply, and it was false.
Absolutely the worst support for a domain provider
Complete waste of space, they offer no telephone support and email support takes over two days to get a response, I am still trying to resolve an issue with them three days later. Don't touch with a barge pole.
Signed up for 2 new domains and wordpress hosting. Within 4 8 hours, login failed mutiple times for account login, then repeated failure login for hosting. No customer support after reg business hours or on weekends. So many complaints that normal support number always busy...DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!
Extortion by publishing whois info on www.who.is (paid removal)
I cannot recommend this service. If you register a domain there and don't pay an additional amount for whois privacy, expect your whois information to be published on www.who.is which is operated by name.com. There, your information can be indexed by search engines and in order to remove it, you will have to pay an additional amount of 30$ to who.is. Furthermore, you will have to buy whois privacy in order to protect your personal information from future publishing.
Inadvertently missed a bill by 36 hours and had my entire server space wiped in that period. Took customer service 3 days and a barrage of Tweets to even reply to my service ticket. They refused to call me on the phone and if you want to call them, tough luck because their phone system is down (convenient!). Eventually I found out my hosting was cancelled 2+ months ago and that I never paid, which was weird since I'm a full time web developer and I'm on my hosting account literally 30 days per month. I think I would have noticed that 60-odd day of service interruption I allegedly experienced. WordPress sites load sluggishly (I beta'd a bunch of client sites on my server space [$25/mo], ran very slowly. Uploaded some projects to my clients' $4/mo GoDaddy account and they're blazing fast—how embarrassing is that). The features are like any other host with cPanel and the reliability is ok when you prepay for everything. Support is where this company really struggles terribly. Oh and check out the SEO work when you Google "Name.com scam" ...Nice one guys.
This outfit was ok at one time (like some years ago). They responded to tkts in a timely manner, now they don't. I have 15 sites with this mob and I fear given the shonky way they now operate may cause enormous stress in the future. Lousy, lousy company. Avoid at all costs.
