Quick Site Migration for New Customers

Interserver is one of the oldest hosting companies, which means that it has decades of experience under its belt. Located in Secaucus, New Jersey, it was originally founded in 1999 and focused on reselling web hosting plans. Since then, they have grown to become a fully-fledged web-hosting provider.

With the purchase of one domain name and a virtual hosting reseller account, InterServer was co-founded by two people, including Mike Lavrik and John Quaglieri.

This is as good as its gets with interesting origin stories, and this really gained my interest, so I wanted to see how much they’ve grown, and what they have to offer.

As such, let’s take a deep dive into the world of yet another hosting provider, as I review InterServer.

Getting Started With InterServer

Creating the account and initially settings things up can be a breeze. I have to say, the moment I logged into the website, the design seemed a bit, off. The website gives me the feeling of being in a retro internet-café and visiting a forum late at night. I kind of love it, even if it does genuinely feel a bit outdated. Anyway, we’re not here to talk about the design that much, it’s in the features where a hosting provider can truly shine.

Screenshot of Interserver home page

Now, on the shared hosting plans, you have standard web hosting, which I will be using to test out their services, but you also have ASP.NET, as well as boost web hosting and reseller hosting.

On the Cloud VPS tab, you have VPS home, Windows VPS, WordPress VPS, WEBUZO VPS, and Storage.

Now, on the storage tab is where I was blown away by the offers, you get 500 GB of monthly storage for $5? That’s like a dollar for 100 GB of storage, an insane deal.

Screenshot of Storage plans and price

Anyway, then you have the Servers tab, where you can create a Dedicated Home, Storage Servers, 10GBPS Dedicated Servers, GPU Dedicated Servers, Rapid Deploy, and Colocation.

Tips, as the name might imply, is their knowledge base. You can log into your account through the Login option.

Okay, so with that out of the way, let’s jump into the account creation process.

Go to the web hosting tab, and click on Standard Web Hosting.

Screenshot of a dropdown menu with Standard Web Hosting highlighted

Here you’ll be taken to a screen where you can see exactly what the package offers, and how much it will end up costing you. I went with the $2.50 plan at this time.

Screenshot of Standard Web Hosting page

Once you click on buy now, you’ll be taken to another screen. You can register a new domain here, which is excellent if you don’t already have one, but in my case, I’m just going to add my trusty domain name here.

Selected I already have a domain and provide a hostname

After clicking on continue, you’ll need to click on “Register New”, enter your login name, password, and agree to the terms of service.

Screenshot of login area to Web Hosting - cPanel

Here’s how that should look like.

Screenshot of the login area: email and password are filled in

Once this is complete, you’ll see this message when you have successfully created your account.

Screenshot of login area with a login details

Going forward, you’ll need to click on continue, and enter a bit more information about yourself, such as your first name, your last name, your company, street address, city, state, zip and country, and phone number.

Screenshot of account information

Once you enter the required information, click on continue.

Screenshot of the offer terms

You’ll finally see how much you need to pay, as well as the billing frequency. Again, you’ll have to agree to the offer terms before you can click on place order. You can click on place order to complete your purchase.

The message that your website is being configured now

Once you place your order, you’ll receive this message.

That’s all there is to signing up and setting up your initial account for InterServer.

Using InterServer to Manage Your Website

It’s time to log in to our newly created account and see what this hosting provider has on offer.

Login to the client area

It’s time to party like it’s 1999 with the most wonderful retro design I’ve seen to date.

Screenshot of client area

This isn’t beautiful by any means, but if it gets the job done then it’s good enough for me. I’m personally the kind of person that chooses function over looks any day, so let’s see if this has what it takes to redeem itself.

On the top bar, you have the following options:

  • Home – just takes you to the main screen you saw on the image above.
  • Domains – the domain page lets you see all of your active, pending, and expired domains.
  • VPS – lets you see all of your VPS’s
  • Storage – The storage tab lets you view storage, buy storage, and buy Acronis Backup.
  • Mail – the mail tab lets you see all of your active, pending, or expired mails.
  • Webhosting –  here you’ll be able to see all of the web hosting packages you’ve purchased so far.

Screenshot of Web Hosting List page

  • Rapid Deploy Servers – lets you see your active, pending, or expired servers.
  • Servers – lets you see a list of your dedicated servers.
  • More – Here you can access the DNS Manager, the Licenses, the SSL, and the Affiliate System.

Now, an important thing to mention here is the fact that InterServer offers free SSL certificates. That being said, if you are running an eCommerce website, opting in for a paid SSL certificate will go a long way into increasing the security of your website even further; however, this is completely fine if you are just running a blog and require no user information.

  • Billing – Here you can review your balance, invoices, contact info, credit cards, and pre-paid funds as well as credit.
  • Settings – Here you can check your account security, change your login, and logout.
  • Support - As the name implies, you’ll be able to access support here. This can be done by opening a new ticket or even contacting live chat support.

Here you can earn $100 when you refer a friend.

Screenshot of Partner program page

This is honestly quite interesting to say the least.

Now, let’s get into some more in-depth features of what you are actually getting with this shared hosting plan.

  • You get a free site migration from your current host to InterServer.
  • You get 24/7 support from their team.
  • Easy to use control panels such as cPanel.
  • Free backups
  • 99% Uptime Guarantee
  • Easy One-Click Installs

Control panel screenshot

Once you click on your domain, you’ll see information such as the hostname, the host server, the IP, any comments, the id, the type, and get access to the login screen to cPanel, order matching domains, the ability to purchase a dedicated IP, your invoice history, cancel website, download backups and the option to migrate a website.

cPanel screenshot

Here’s what you’ll end up seeing once you log into the cPanel.

And to be honest, it offers quite a lot, some things I’ve seen elsewhere, and some things that are unique.

I specifically love the fact that you get access to the Softaculous app installer, which essentially lets you install any of the apps through the usage of scripts.

Screenshot of the Softaculous app installer

You also get access to the Sitepad Website Builder – Themes, which essentially gives you themes to play around with on your website without requiring you to know any programming languages.

Aside from that, you can use their free website builder to build professional web pages with the Wysiwyg Editor. However, once I tested this, I came to the conclusion that it was just generally an array of themes you can pick up and change up in some way, so it might not be the best thing in the world. I’d still advise you to go with a WordPress theme, as those do offer a much higher level of flexibility.

With that out of the way, let’s take an in-depth look at all of the other cPanel features that are on offer.

cPanel essentially allows you to manage your email in great detail.

You have access to email accounts, forwarders, email routing, autoresponders, default addresses, mailing lists, track delivery, global email filters, email filters, email deliverability, address importer, spam filters, archive, encryption, BoxTrapper, configure Greylisting and email disk usage.

Screenshot of cPanel Email tab

Each one of these is exceptional to have, and I am specifically a fan of the email disk usage option as I can easily manage how much of my server storage is used on emails. Autoresponders are excellent as well, especially if you end up running marketing campaigns. Overall, all that’s here is nice to have.

JetBackup is software that lets you back up anything on your website to the disaster recovery servers located within remote facilities.

Screenshot of cPanel JETBACKUP tab

Here, you get everything from full account backups, to file backups, DNS Zone Backups, Database Backups, and so on. Generally speaking, if you are paranoid that things might break, or that you might lose your data. This is extremely nice and convenient to have.

In this tab, you have access to file manager features, that essentially lets you manage, manipulate, and do just about anything you want to with your files. What I specifically love here is the fact that you have access to the directory privacy setting, which just lets you lock files, and you can review the disk usage in great detail. Moreover, you can also set up FTP accounts, which is always convenient and even use the Backup Wizard to make your life a lot easier in terms of backing up your files.

Screenshot of cPanel Files tab

The databases tab lets you access, as the name might imply, your server’s database. It primarily uses MySQL, and you can log in through phpMyAdmin.

Screenshot of the phpMyAdmin

Screenshot of the MySQL Databases page

Moving on to domains, this gives you access to management functions of all of your domains, subdomains, addon domains, aliases, redirects, and things of that nature.

You’ll end up using all of these, so it’s good to know it’s all here.

Screenshot of Domains tab

Metrics are important, as we can make an analysis of these metrics to improve the content on our website, or even see which line of products sells the most on our eCommerce website. This being the case, here you are getting access to the number of visitors that are visiting your site, errors, bandwidth usage, Awstats, analog stats, and Webalizer. Plus, you can even view the resource usage.

Screenshot of Metrics tab

This will all come in handy, so you know exactly when the time to upgrade to another package comes your way, and when your website needs that boost.

On the security side of things, you gain access to SSH Access, the IP Blocker, SSL/TLS management, API Tokens management, hotlink protection, leech protection, ModSecurity, SSL/TLS Status, Two-Factor Authentication, and Imunify360.

Screenshot of Security tab

I’d honestly set up the SSL, hotlink protection, and two-factor authentication instantly if I were you.

Speaking of Imunify360 as-well, its powerful tools are clear, easy to use, and most importantly, do the job well.

This is specifically how InterServer shines, as its implementation of multiple security systems ensures that its firewall can block outside attackers, and through machine learning, it always stays ahead of the curve. Best of all, this defense mechanism is included throughout all of the plans, and Imunify360 can constantly scan your hosting drive for malicious files.

Moving on to software, and well, damn, it offers quite a lot. For a website that looked like it came from 1999, they genuinely do have some more modern options available on here.

You can connect Cloudflare, SitePad Website Builder, WordPress Manager by Softacolous, install PHP PEAR packages, Perl Modules, RubyGems, Site Software, Optimize Website functions, MultiPHP Manager, MultiPHP INI Editor, Node.js, Python, and Ruby app setup options. It’s quite amazing really.

Screenshot of Software tab

On the advanced tab, you’ll see settings such as LiteSpeed Web Cache Manager, Cron Jobs, Track DNS, Indexes, Error Pages, Apache Handlers, MIME Types, and even see a Virus Scanner.

What really stood out for me here is the LiteSpeed Web Cache Manager, which lets you dramatically reduce page load times, provide an exceptional user experience as a result of that, and can even handle traffic spikes.

Screenshot of LiteSpeed Web Cache Manager

This is definitely great to have.

Cloudflare integration is also nice to have due to the fact that it is a free CDN type of product that can protect you against threats such as SQL injection and identity theft.

Cloudflare logo

Cloudflare improves site performance as well as helps in speeding up loading times through using multiple data centers that are located across the globe.

Now, when we move on to preferences, here we can see the password & security, change the language of the cPanel UI, change the style, review the contact information, and even manage the users.

All standard here, nothing too flashy, if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it mentality throughout.

Screenshot of Preferences tab

This is all there is to InterServer’s cPanel.

With that out of the way, let’s move on to support.

InterServer Level of Support

As usual, let’s see if the support team is up to their claims. Email support probably does work as advertised, so I’m always curious about how the live chat support stacks up. Are they really 24/7? Let’s see by trying to close this account and ask for a refund.

Screenshot of live chat

Let’s dive in, you need to enter your name, email, and the “I need help with” tab only has one option, 1 Support, so, let’s just click on Start Chat and see how far we go.

Conversation with support in live chat

They took 60 seconds to respond.

Conversation with support in live chat

And then sent an email and did as I was instructed to do.

That’s about it.

60 seconds response time, honestly I’m just blown away at this point.

Server Speed and Uptime

From my testing, the service did indeed live up to its claims of providing 99% uptime, as the website did not crash or go offline once. If we look throughout their history, they also have an average uptime of around 99% as well. Where they truly shine is the speed, as they have 0.20 response time to 0.90 loading time. Now, keep in mind that all of this will be dependent on the type of website you run, so if it’s heavy on WordPress plugins, for example, it will load slower. That being said I’m satisfied with the speed here.

InterServer Pricing

Now, in terms of standard web hosting, the standard fee is $5 per month and $8 per Windows or WordPress hosting per month.

At the time of writing, I grabbed a deal that’s $2.50 per month, however, so keep in mind that they might constantly push out promotions.

Screenshot of InterServer standard web hosting plans

What I found really unique is the slider on the Cloud Virtual Private Servers pricing tab, as you have a slider from 1 to 16 whereas you slide, the price changes, and so do the specs. It begins at $6.00 per month and it is brilliant.

Screenshot of InterServer Cloud VPS hosting plans

So I’m just going to slide it a bit.

Move the slider to choose the appropriate plan.

For a website with ancient looks, it does try to do something modern occasionally. Anyway, the slider goes up to $96 per month, and you get 16 cores, 32768MB of memory, 480GB of SSD storage, and 16TB of the transfer.

Our scripts come with a one-click installation feature that gives you the freedom to create professional-level websites without any coding skills.

Pros and Cons of InterServer

  • Transparent Pricing
  • High Level of Security
  • Amazing Infrastructure
  • Well-Established
  • Free Migrations
  • Free Weekly Backups

  • Outdated Website Design
  • Bad User Interface

Well, that was quite the surprise. Not only did I get a response within 60 seconds from the live chat support team, but I saw a plethora of cPanel features I definitely did not expect from the initial presentation of the website.

The very moment I logged in, I took a trip of nostalgia back to the 90s when websites looked like that and had extremely low expectations from that point onward. These expectations were tremendously exceeded, in the positive sense, as this hosting provider is quite solid. What it lacks in looks, it more than makes up for with fair pricing and functionality.

While this isn’t the most beginner-friendly experience out there, it surely has its uniqueness, so if you want something reliable, this could be a good choice.
