HostDog is a smaller hosting company, but they have been around for quite a while. They don’t list exactly when they were founded, but only that they have been in business for more than a decade, which is quite impressive. They have their data center in Germany, which seems to be a nice modern facility.
The company offers shared, VPS and dedicated servers. Most of them are at fairly competitive prices, especially for the dedicated servers. These aren’t the highest end servers on the market, but they will get the job done for most individuals and companies who are looking for budget minded hosting.
The company was somewhat difficult to track information down about since they don’t provide too much about themselves on their site, and their social media accounts were only established in 2014. From what I could find, however, they do seem to provide good hosting at a fair price.
Uptime & Reliability
Hosting seems quite stable
It was difficult to find people who made any comments on the stability of their hosting one way or another. Their social media sites only just opened a few months ago (September 2014) so nobody has really commented much on them at this point. I did find some people on a web forums that said they were happy with the stability of the hosting. This is a very small sampling, however, so it is not possible to confirm. They only have a 99% uptime guarantee, which is lower than normal.
They do seem to have a nice data center, and they use quality hardware and other features so the chances seem good that they are a good stable hosting provider.
Features
Nice features for all their hosting
There are quite a few different features that come included with your hosting package, and you also get quite a few different options within each package. For example, with your dedicated servers you can choose between CentOS, Debian, and Ubunto. You can also select whether you prefer a 32 or 64 bit version of the OS.
You can also choose between cPanel or Plesk (for a small fee) or you can use their free control panel options, Virtualmin or ISPConfig. Both of which will get the job done, though they aren’t as feature rich as cPanel and Plesk.
You can also register new domains through this company, which makes it a nice ‘one stop shop’ for all your hosting needs.
Support
Good support but no 24/7 live options
When you get a hold of this company you will get good quality support. They are on staff 24/7 and can typically solve any issues you’re having quickly and easily. They have a nice live chat feature that you can use, or you can email them with support requests 24/7. Their phone support is good, but only available 10am-6pm, which is disappointing. Presumably that is German time.
Their self help options include a nice blog style knowledge base and a FAQ that can answer a lot of questions.
Pricing
Great pricing especially for dedicated servers
The price points for shared and VPS hosting are about average for the industry. They do have some nice dedicated servers available at very affordable prices as well. While you’re not getting ripped off with the VPS or shared hosting, the real deals are with the dedicated servers.
It is important to note that these aren’t the highest end dedicated servers, but for most people they will be more than enough. They do give you the root access that many people are looking for, and for the price you may be able to use a dedicated server for the price of a nice VPS with other companies.
Summary
Quality hosting at all levels
All the hosting packagers at HostDog are quite good and you’ll likely be happy with any of them. The real reason why this is such an attractive option, however, is their affordable dedicated hosting. If you want the control of a dedicated server, but not the really high price, this is a nice company to consider.
Pros:
- Low priced dedicated servers
- Easy upgrades as you need them
- Nice features
Cons:
- No 24/7 phone support
- Only 99% uptime guarantee
- Social media accounts are not very active
