HostDime's poor customer service and their screwing with my IPTABLES during modifications after the server was turned o

Poor customer response. While doing modifications don't plan on turning off iptables, they screw with you causing disconnects multiple times. I opened a ticket to get them to leave my VPS alone and absoutely NO response. I had to ...Read Morerebuild 3 times and the first 2 rebuilds had to be manually done by HostDime. This is supposed to be automatic. It fails. Its too bad they have no support and don't get back to you when a new customer is having so many issues with them screwing with my iptables on my VPS. They shouldn't be screwing with the VPS once it is turned over to the customer unless requested by the customer.

Terrible support, or lack of! When I did talk to them they were very professional and nice, but you can't get them to respond to you in a reasonable amount of time. They say 24x7, but they do NOT respond, so I challenge them saying they have 24x7 support. I opened the ticket on a Saturday morning after 0700.

I was a client with VPSLatch since 2011, long before HostDime took them over. They were. Great company who worked tirelessly to help you and make sure their clients were happy. Servers worked great and the prices were reasonable.

When HostDime took over, things became tolerable. The service often had a lot of downtime, support would take hours or days to get back to you and often issues were left completely unresolved.

I fell on hard time before HostDime came into the picture. At which time, I was often late on payments. So an agreement was worked out where my bill would be due later in the month (at that time I think it was around the 7th). After that my account would be suspended. I could get up to 2 months behind at times and it was worked out that as long as I didn’t expect to get beyond that, I didn’t have to worry about termination. Just suspension and possible late fees after the first month. Okay. More then reasonable and fair and it was a huge help.

It was RARE that I’d go more then 2 months and on the few times I did, I contacted them and while I’d have to pay late fees they were happy to work with me.

After HostDime took over, as I said previously, things changed. In September 2018 I started being charged a $10 late fee EVERY MONTH. This was done without warning or notice. I was going through some issues in my personal life and decided to let it go and not bothering arguing it. It was $10. It was one of those “pick your battles” moments and I didn’t feel that $10 extra dollars a month was worth the hassle. So I let it go.

In October 2019, my VPS was canceled without notice or warning. They claim to have sent one but I never received it. I even went through every email ever associated with the account to see if I had just missed it. I had never received one.

The last email I received from them on one email was in September 2019. On the other email it was March 2018. The last email I received (from Sep) was the typical warning that my account would be suspended. I read it, same old, same old. I never received another email after that from them.

In October 2019, my account was canceled/terminated. 8 years of my life and hard work was gone. I’d lost my computer in a fire and so I had no back ups. I didn’t get an email that it would be terminated or that it even was terminated!

I went into my account at the end of October/beginning of November and my typical bill was there. But when I went to pay, I saw it said “canceled” next to the name of my VPS. I immediately contacted them. At which point (several days later) I was told there was a back up and it could be restored for a $50 fee. I didn’t have it at the time. They informed me that this back up could be over written at any time the longer I waited.

On December 2nd, 2019 our home caught fire and we were forced to leave it. We now live in our truck. I contacted them again to verify the backup was still there, as I had been doing frequently throughout the last month. At this point I was told the backup they had wasn’t a backup at all and wasn’t valid and that it never would have been $50 to restore my server anyway. It would have been $500 dollars. I make $771 a month. $500 isn’t a reasonable amount and it most certainly isn’t what I had been told for the last month.

I eventually was able to get a call from them where their philosophy was basically “Too bad. That’s not our problem.”

I had an agreement for 8 years. I had never paid a late fee till suddenly last year. And the the last email I got was about a suspension. NEVER was I even INFORMED that my VPS would be suspended or was even suspended period after it happened! I have no doubt they would have taken more monthly payments from me if I hadn’t contacted them asking what was going on. I don’t think they were would have told me. They have a history of not informing me of issues or changes going on to my account or billing. Especially when it involves money I’ve now noticed.

And I mean, after 8 years they don’t have a single back up? I chose them originally because they did nightly backups and apparently none have been done or kept in 8 years.

I will be contacting both a lawyer and the Better Business Bureau about this.

Expert Overview

Large global hosting company with great services

HostDime was founded in 2001 and quickly grow to the point where they are now one of the largest hosting providers around.  With over two million domains hosted on their servers, they are able to support just about any type of website.

They have data centers in multiple areas including the US, Europe, South America and more.  HostDime offers everything from entry level shared hosting packages all the way up to high end dedicated severs, making them a great choice for just about any type of site.

If you browse their Facebook or other social media page you will see some upset customers who experienced less than helpful customer service.  It is difficult to tell if this is actually a problem or just that these people are the ones doing the most posting.  Either way, with 2 million+ customers, you’re going to have a few bad experiences.  Overall, however, their services seem to be highly rated by current customers.

Uptime & Reliability

Great uptime with complicated guarantees

Each package comes with an uptime guarantee of 99.9% in a given month.  If your site drops below this level, you will get a credit to your account based on how much downtime you had.  If it goes just below 99.9%, you get 10% off the fee.  If it falls between 90 and 94.9% uptime for the month, you’ll get a 25% credit for the month.  Below 90% earns you a free month.

Despite the complicated (but generous) guarantee, the uptime overall seems to be very good.  Most people won’t experience any problems or need to claim their discounted prices.

Great features for all types of websites

HostDime has something for everyone in their extensive list of packages.  For shared hosting, they have three different plans, all of which are Linux based.  They do have some limitations throughout all three packages, but they get less restrictive as you go up.

You can also choose from three different reseller plans, which provide for unlimited domains and a full 100Mbps connection.

When you get up to the VPS plans you can choose between Linux and Windows for your operating system.  Interestingly, they still limit you on disk space and bandwidth (all their packages have these limitations).  There are a total of six VPS plans to look at, three Linux and three Windows.

Finally, their dedicated servers come in five different options depending on the type of server you need.  Anything from 2gigs of ram up to 16, and their CPUs are all dual core, quad core or hexa core (top end only).  Like the other hosting options, this too has some limitations in disk space and bandwidth.

Good support with a questionable reputation

Just about every negative thing that is posted about HostDime is related to their technical or customer support team.  People have commented that they are rude, arrogant and often take longer than they should to address issues.  On the other hand, however, they have also gotten a lot of positive comments in this area from their customer.

From what I can tell, it seems to be a mixed bag, which is not surprising when looking at a company of this size.  They have support teams in multiple countries, so it is likely all going to depend on who you happen to talk to in the event that you have a problem.

Mostly industry standard pricing with some optional add-ons

When you look through the different hosting packages you will find that the pricing is fairly standard.  You can save some money by signing up for an annual contract on any of their packages.  Most things that you need will be included in the package, which is nice.  They do offer things like SSL for an added fee.

They have a 90 day satisfaction guarantee, but you must provide a reason why you aren’t happy if you want to get a refund.  If they don’t think your reason is valid (meaning that they tried and failed to fix it) you won’t get the money back.  This is an unusual guarantee to say the least.

Great hosting with lots of options

It is really not surprising that this company is one of the larger hosting providers in the world. They have a lot to offer and do quite a good job overall.  There are some complaints about their customer service and support teams, but it is impossible for a company this size not to have at least a few complaints posted about it. They have A LOT of different packages to choose from, so many that it can actually get confusing.

  • Large company
  • Global hosting options
  • Generous uptime guarantee
  • Room to grow from shared all the way to dedicated
  • High end hardware available

  • No unlimited packages available
  • Too many hosting packages to choose from
  • Some reputation for poor customer service
  • Terrible cancellation policy
