VMware vCloud, NSX, & Project Dimension: Hybrid & Multi-Cloud Management Tools
VMware is seeking to continue to push their market-leading position as makers of complete virtualization solutions for enterprise-level data centers by evolving to meet the changing logistics of public cloud outsourcing in corporate IT. In order to meet current devops requirements & support container-driven web/mobile app deployments of software for the largest companies in production, VMware has released improvements to their vCloud platform including turn-key AWS installments. Project Dimension extends the VMware advantage as a complete suite of software-defined data center (SDDC) solutions. For example, companies with extensive existing virtualization solutions using vSphere, NSX, VSAN, and other VMware software can migrate easily to the AWS cloud for hardware cost savings, managing on-premises & remote resources from a single pane of glass. Multi-cloud & hybrid cloud orchestration solutions are some of the most sought-after platforms in large scale enterprise data center management currently, with VMware further targeting SMEs by announcing a 50% cost reduction on AWS virtualization products for smaller companies. According to ZDnet:
VMware also announced the integration of NSX with AWS Direct Connect for private and high performance connectivity on-premises. The company said this will provide private and consistent connectivity between VMware workloads running on AWS and those running on-premises. The Direct Connect option is geared toward companies with bandwidth heavy workloads while the VPN option offers private connectivity over a standard Internet connection.
VMware NSX is a complete network virtualization solution for data center management that will run on both the AWS & Microsoft Azure cloud platforms. VMware Cloud for AWS can be used to orchestrate complete multi-cloud solutions for complex SDDC requirements in enterprise. There will also now be a Platinum version of the vSphere software distribution available on a subscription basis. To challenge competitors in the container orchestration sector, the company announced the release of a new VMware Kubernetes Engine (VKE) that will run on both AWS & Microsoft Azure public cloud hardware as PaaS/IaaS products. Sector-specific PaaS/IaaS distributions are a major current focus for VMware, as third-party partners & consultants can use these frameworks to build custom solutions for their regional clients with greater speed, resource efficiency, & data security that compete against open source toolsets with more polished features.
VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger:
When we think about the network, we are just so excited with what we have done and what we're seeing in the industry. We've gotten a lot done over the last five years in networking. Look at these numbers: Eighty million switch ports have been shipped. We are now 10X larger and No. 2 in SDN. We have over 7,500 customers running on NSX. Eighty-two percent of the Fortune 100 has now adopted NSX. You have made NSX the standard in software-defined networking. We acquired SD-WAN, VeloCloud - that's the hottest product in VMware's portfolio today. It's the opportunity to fundamentally transform branch and wide-area networking, and we're extending it to the edge.
VMware Cloud on AWS is now allowing customers to be able to migrate thousands of virtual machines with zero downtime and schedule exactly when to cut over to a new cloud environment with VMware NSX Hybrid Connect (previously known as VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension) powered by vMotion and vSphere Replication. VMware also is offering a free migration cost assessment with VMware Cost Insight to assist with cloud migration planning.
Comprehensive Kubernetes Support:
Wavefront provides holistic Kubernetes metrics insight to help ensure no monitoring blind spots. Building on the integration with Pivotal Container Service (PKS), Wavefront has added quick start from within PKS; programmatic enforcement of pre-defined alerts for important KPIs across desired Kubernetes clusters and components; and kube-state metrics to gain a holistic understanding of the health of Kubernetes within PKS.
VMware Code Stream:
Speeds software delivery and streamlines troubleshooting with release pipelines and analytics and includes pre-built pipeline plugins for Wavefront, Harbor, Nexus, PKS, Ansible and Slack.
New VMware Cloud Services Suite: Cloud Assembly, Service Broker, & Code Stream
VMware Cloud Services has been upgraded to include a new suite of devops tools for Agile software teams & CI/CD. These include: VMware Cloud Assembly, VMware Service Broker and VMware Code Stream. With VMware Cloud Assembly, developers can launch virtual machines in elastic cluster networks using disk images in a manner similar to Docker containers but with particular legacy-app, upgrade & security advantages. Multi-cloud solutions can be networked across on-premises, AWS, or Microsoft Azure web server hardware. VMware Service Broker can assist IT purchase managers to get the best pricing on microservices, cloud hosting rates, & other required ecosystem tools for third-party plugin solutions. There are thousands of companies registered as VMware partners who provide custom-coded solutions for businesses of all sizes with vSphere, NSX, & vCloud. VMware Code Stream targets the Agile project management sector with tools for automating web server deployments and operating SaaS apps at scale. Many businesses rely on VMware for robust security features for databases in production, and the AWS RDS integration seeks to extend that leadership around multi-cloud constructs with database solutions re-factored as microservices.
VMware vSphere Platinum is now available with a suite of robust web security tools integrated in the package distribution. VMware AppDefense is designed for VM security in cloud hosting web/mobile apps in high-traffic production environments. vSphere Admin allows devops deployment of apps across automated elastic cluster hardware instances with the same orchestration capabilities as containers using disk image prints. VMware is marketing these solutions strongly to enterprise clients that demand the highest level of data security across the software development lifecycle for web/mobile apps in production. Open source solutions remain VMware's biggest industry competition in cloud data center orchestration.
Public Cloud Security:
vSphere Platinum secures applications, infrastructure, data, and access with the combined capabilities of core vSphere and AppDefense. It enables a simple and powerful way to maintain existing workflows, while supporting collaboration amongst vSphere Admins, and Security, Compliance and Application teams; making for less disruptive response and remediation in a security incident.
Amazon RDS on VMware is designed to support enterprise-grade security for web/mobile applications running on MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, & MariaDB. VMware also plans to support Oracle database hosting on the vSphere Platinum platform in future upgrades. With Project Dimension, data centers can manage microservices more efficiently in multi-cloud constructs that include many different development teams and apps in live CI/CD production. This can facilitate multi-domain web hosting solutions for companies with many branded public cloud contracts, each with unique platform development requirements.
Data Center Virtualization:
Project Dimension will extend VMware Cloud to deliver SDDC infrastructure and hardware as-a-service to on-premises locations. Because this is will be a service, it means that VMware can take care of managing the infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, and performing patching and maintenance. This in turn means customers can focus on differentiating their business building innovative applications rather than spending time on day-to-day infrastructure management.
Corporations using existing VMware solutions in on-premises data centers have a simplified migration path to AWS & Microsoft Azure public cloud hardware for cost savings. VMware's devops tools integration supports the version control, web server disk image automation, & Kubernetes orchestration requirements of enterprise programming teams with Docker support. Customers purchasing more than 5 vSphere Platinum licenses receive a $10,000 USD credit on for running VMware vCloud on AWS. Tier-level pricing will be billed through AWS & Microsoft Azure as featured vendor & partner services for VMware solutions at scale.
VMware Cloud on AWS runs VMware's enterprise class software-defined data center (SDDC) on the AWS cloud, allowing customers to run any application across public, private or hybrid cloud environments.
